Keep on getting this pop-up asking me to convert to Windows 10. I'm a little reluctant because if it ain't broke don't fix it. ...well I don't follow that advice when it comes to my bikes. I'm always interested in tweaks and mods.

What say ye?

First, I get these pop-ups as well, and haven't taken the bait. I'm probably the most illiterate on the computer around, so fear over rules decision making. I'm fine with whichever windows system I'm running now.

And welcome to the world of misfits. Do you have a TW? Mostly dirt riding? Hope it's an '87, cause they are the fastest, as LT will verify.

I'm glad you asked this. I had the same question last night and would love the avice of those in the know. Ignoring the improvements are there any negatives about upgrading? Jtom, I do know enough to know that you should go directly to Microsofts website if you are going to upgrade. Dont use the link!

Unfortunately I spent my first thirty years only worried about women, fishing and hunting. Because of this I now know absolutely dick about computers!

...and why not use the link? It's like a permanent thing in the tool bar on the lower right now.

Well . . . I had pre-registered and was told middle of October I could install windows 10. I run a multi screen, dual video card setup. I had read that people were having issues with Windows 10 being a bear to setup with multiple screens &/or video cards. I'm now among those people. Maybe five minutes into the install - after I realized which video card it liked - I rolled back to my Windows 7 Pro.

Never fear - computer geek is here!

I've hemmed and hawed for twenty plus years, but have always been boxed in by my professional environment. However, on my hot little thumb drive is every thing I need to go Linux Mint. Microsoft, you can go kiss my a**!

Keeping in mind that the only mastery of computers I have is the ability to find any genre of pornography quickly, I will say that I have been burned by thinking that I was clicking on legitimate links like Microsoft's only to find out I was also downloading malware.

Which is undoubtedly what happened to poor LT and thus necessitated this thread. It may not have been the Win 10 but rather the Edge browser that had the malware attached.

i changed 2 of my computers to win 10. i don't think it's any better than 8.1 and i don't like edge, it's crappy. firefox still works ok. my laptop seems to start faster. i did take it out of my desk top because i read that since everything is in "cloud" that means microsoft has access to everything on your computer. you do have 30 days to revert to your last system and after that your stuck with it. i found that with win 8.1, i had to buy a new hard drive to get back to win7. the bastards didn't say anything about that when they offered the upgrade for $10

The biggest reason to change to Win 10 is security.

I was running Win XP on the family computers (4).

But MS no longer supports Win XP, no security updates leaves your computer exposed.

I purchased a refurbished computer that came with Win 7. I liked 7, but at some point, it will not be supported.

Tried Win 8 and 8.1 along with the Classic Shell to make it look like 7...still didn't like it...cost me $100 for 8.

And if you have Win 7 or 8, the upgrade to Win 10 is free....but according to MS, only for a limited time.

After that, it will cost $100+, depending on which version you get.

I ended up buying 3 more refurbished computers (about $150 each, with Win 7) for the family.

Then did the free Win 10 upgrade. All are running smoothly with no glitches.

So now we have 4 computers running Win 10......and my kids use their smart phones 90% of the time.....

......and I'm sitting in my chair writing this on my iPad..... :(

Windows 7 life cycle goes through January 2020, Windows 8 through January 2023, most of us will probably have replaced our current computers before then, and get a new OS preinstalled.
The advantages of upgrading from Windows 7 or 8 is what some consider a better, nicer start menu, faster boot times, and other cosmetic changes along with increased security that will be kept up to date. Windows 10 seems to have eliminated all the complaints about the initial release of Windows 8,which was so different, and tablet oriented, it irritated lots of folks.
I updated my laptop and my garage music\youtube\internet desktop to 10, even on an old dual core pentium, it runs well, boots fast, and works great for those duties. I use Chrome, and continue to use it as my default browser. I left my living room HTPC on Windows 7 Pro, because I like using Windows Media Center for playing movies from the networked storage on my home office pc. (Media Center has been discontinued) My home office PC dual boots, Windows 7 or Windows 10, a choice on power up, because I like 10, but my wife does the banking and bill paying, and changing her OS would not be something I'm willing to do, SWMBO likes\understands windows 7, so I dare not mess with that. If for any reason, you are unhappy with the upgrade, or something you run won't work on 10, as stated above, you have 30 days to set it back to the previous OS through the control panel, uninstall runs fast and easy from what I've seen, I did the uninstall on my living room pc, it was quick and painless, back to what I had in just a few reboots. If you don't run anything old, unique, or have a complicated hardware setup, it should be easy, and, it's free, what's not to like? One consideration though, google windows 10 security settings, if you're worried about that kind of thing...

Good info, Byron.

After the Win 10 install, it took about 15-20 minutes per computer to secure and privatize how much is "shared" with MS.

Under the default settings, it seems like you give MS permission to do whatever it wants with what is on your computer.

I particularly don't care for the "peer sharing" of updates.
