My brother and I did a 12 hour adventure/hard enduro ride on Monday: we started from my home in Cherry Valley, California, at around 11 in the morning, rode street for about three hours, out to Ocotillo Wells, did some sweet rock crawling, raced around on the washes for a while, did some sand dunes and gnarly hill climbs, and got home just before 11:30 P.M.

My little Yamaha really had its work cut out for it! Really had to work the motor and gear box to squeeze every little drop out of it :) There were a number of hills that I am certain would have been impossible on my DR200, but were barely possible on the XT 250, with the right technique: start about an eighth mile from the base of the hills, go wide open through first, second, and third (fully pinned out in third gear - 46 mph), dodge rocks and bounce around over whoops, and down shift to second part way up. There was actually one hill with sand most of the way, and a very steep rock face for about the last bike-length, that I was able to do without down shifting from third! Granted, it was SERIOUSLY bogging and had BARELY enough to get me over the top, even after grabbing the clutch lever. But it WAS possible in third gear, and would NOT have been possible in second gear. This was the case with many of the dunes and hills out there. Some (not surprisingly) were impossible on the XT, no matter the technique. The only reason I was able to make it up a lot of them at all, was the fact that I had as much space as I wanted to build speed/momentum.

Here is the one video that I shot: blow sand hill, I believe it's called. We also went over to Shell Reef and did all the hill climbs there and in between.

Anyway, before you all die of boredom, here's what an XT250 looks like at 9,000 RPM in third gear.

You can see the steep portion of this dune off to the right; the 87 XR600 cruised right up that in third gear, with power and speed to spare.

That looks like a fun place to ride. I'm glad some places still have them.
Yea Ocotillo Wells kicks ass! There aren't too many places in the world better than SoCal for motorcycle riding of all varieties! We have it all here, from paved racetracks for superbikes, awesome mountain roads for supermoto/street bikes, desert, mountains, and woods riding for dual sport/hard enduro, world-class motocross tracks (Glen Helen, Racetown 395...), epic highways (Pacific Coast Highway) for touring/adventure...
