Other than the VIN #, is there any way to identify what year a TW is? Specifically I want to know if a bike is a '87 or newer.

Reasoning is I bought 2 parts bikes from a guy. One is a '91. The other doesn't have a visible VIN - front end damage.

Is there some wiring I can look at to rule out if its a '87 or newer?

You can look at the CDI. They are different. I can't tell you the specific differences, but I do believe the 87 has less wires. Also, the rectifier will look different. You could post a picture. Each year has a different color scheme. Basing a year on color is pretty conclusive, but if you have a bike with no plastics then it would be hard to tell.
