So I finally decided last night to try and improve my pannier design using the 2 night vision goggle cases. My first design a couple of years back used large D ring straps and an aluminum sub frame integrated to my luggage carrier, but it was not very rigid or stable for off-roading.
I decided to tie them in directly to the rack with SS spacers, and I reoriented them lengthwise, (Rear opening lids) as well as lowered their center of gravity. It still allows access to the clamps holding my spare fuel cells, and allows some room and attachment points to stow lighter gear on top of the bags, tent, etc. I do need to bend a U bracket to go under the frame and tie them in below, but they are very solid feeling now just as is.
A fellow forum member a couple of weeks ago paid me a visit and got me all thinking about a guys night or two of off road camping, (read, drinking) excursion, so I needed to expand my payload! (Thanks Jerry!)
