I'd guess that most people use the factory one on the left side of the frame. You must've lost yours when your bike was customized.

 

I have the one that came with the bike but don't like hanging the helmet that close to the ground or on one of the dirtiest parts of the bike.

Modern helmets often don’t have “D” rings, only clips – meaning there is nothing to lock onto – I have taken to using a cable bike lock, and running it through the chin guard – hardly neat, but perhaps more effective …..

Reading some of the reviews (ignoring the ones that say "part missing"), I think I'll stick to the short cable method - but thanks for the link, it shows that at least they're starting to address the issue ....

 

I wanted a ratchet strap but my new helmet comes with D rings. I just want something to secure the helmet from thieves of opportunity and so wind or a bump doesn't send the helmet to the ground.

 

If you use a ratcheting helmet Sierra Electronics has a gizmo you slide through one part of the ratcheting mechanism that allows you to use the installed helmet lock. I've used one from Whitehorse Press for years with my Nolans and it is a hand tool.

 

If you have D rings, use the trigger locks that law enforcement gives out. Just attach to any part of the bike.

 

The one with the ratchet strap, I just clip together and hang it on the helmet lock. It looks locked in place. I lock my D-ring helmet in place. Where I am so far people haven't been stealing helmets. A deterrent, just have greasy hair and throw a ball cap on a few times and make sure lots of people see you. They won't want your helmet.

 

I rarely park where I can’t just hang my helmet on the mirror or set it on the ground next to the bike. If it was that risky of a place I would carry my helmet... and cable lock the bike.

All those miles on two wheels and I never thought about someone stealing my helmet. I guess size XXXL looks to big to carry off.

I just carry my helmet with me, here the thieves just cut the chin strap and walk off with the helmet. On a mopie I had the helmet could be locked away under the seat or in a lockable top box. The problem with that is that various things start to find their way in there change, tools, knickers etc.
The upside of a lockable box is that your helmet stays dry if it rains, and it becomes a low back rest if you are 2 up.

So do people cut the chin strap then rebuild the helmet to install a new one after stealing the helmet?

Glad I live in an area that I don't have to worry about it; everyone just puts them on their mirrors. Of course 90% of the people around here are armed so that probably explains why no one worries about it; an armed society is a polite society. I was told when I moved here, by a pretty serious guy, that if I ever dug a hole and found bones- fill in the hole and shut your mouth. True story!

 

I also live in an area with little to no crime but theft happens everywhere, especially thieves of opportunity.

 

Since I use a full face helmet, I use the trigger cable lock readily available from any local police dept., through the chin bar locked onto my Cyclerack.

 

After wiping off the love bugs I place the helmet over a mirror and wrap the chin strap around the stem. I then run the strap through the d-rings and snug it down. Not fool proof at all but it keeps some one from snatching it off the mirror.
After 45 years of street riding I've not lost one yet.

 

Yeah, 44 years of riding and mostly leaving helmet at bike, I have never had one messed with. The rest of the time I carry it with me as 'man bag' , and they are hella handy for backing your way out of a bar fight when you are swing that thing like a mace!! Have had experience when a HD 1%er wanted to grab it to take a shit in.

LOL, no, thankfully right before I had to possibly chip my nice Bell finish and make him even more toothless, my 6'-5" , 300 LB ex bouncer friend stepped in to help him reason.

I’d second having a lockable watertight stash on bike for helmet. I store my helmet in one of the boxes so it don get dropped in gay rage.

Nope, this was also the first time I heard the term, "Sidewalk Biker". He had the vest, boots, chain drive wallet, but did not have a bike at the tavern and probably did not have one, or a running one any, but like to hang out on the sidewalk around those that did...
