5 gallon fuel tank

Three years ago my TW got a XT350 steel fuel tank of about 3 gallon.

That’s fine for the everyday ride, but now I got aspirations to do a big ride as soon as I get my pension and will be free of the everyday grind of a job.

Last week I stumbled upon an Acerbis tank for a Yamaha TT 600, made in 1989 and never used.

The TT600 was never introduced in this country, so the shop finally put a reduced price on it.

I took it home for $50.- and it looked like it could be made to fit.

Today I put it on and it looks like I need to make some brackets and that’s it, fits just fine and should hold 20 liter or 5 gallon.

It came without the 2 petcocks and tank cap.

Does not look so bad

It is sitting a bit higher than the old tank

Image

The seat is in its normal position, the small hole in the tank just above the front of the seat has a threaded nut in it. The seat was shortened to fit the XT350 tank. Now I may have to lengthen it to fit the TT tank

Image

I may put another riser under the handlebar that is here turned all the way to the left

Image

The 2 holes in the bottom have threaded nuts in them, I put a rag on top of the frame tube to keep the tank in the right position

Image

The front fork tubes and triple tree are just not touching the tank

That’s what the bottom looks like

I've been looking for one of those (or an early Tenere tank) for years.

We never got the bikes, either. Once in a blue moon I see the tanks offered in Oz.

I think Aqualine also made one of about the same capacity but it's pretty much unobtainium in The States.

Nice score. Did you get any of the brackets with it?

If anyone in The States ever finds one of these tanks I'll give you three stock tanks AND a Barry Manilow album fer it.

Congratulations, A TW first. Do I see the holes for dual (read that as two) petcocks (one on each side of the tank) which would reduce the problem of trapped gas and make it a real 5 gallon tank.

Good onya. All tanks can be fitted, some are just not worth the trouble (this one probably is). Tom

That tank looks fantastic.

I have the Clarke XT tank on mine. You say the tank does not get in the way of the triples or forks so you probably will not have to reshape the tank. However if you do have to here is how (I did it on my Clarke for the forks). Clarke tanks are made of PP (polypropylene)& most other plastic tanks are (there are XLPE, cross linked poly ethylene, tanks also). When PP is heated it changes from milky color to almost glass clear at the softening point. So I heated the tank with a hot air gun until it changed to glass clear & I could see where more heat was required. I wrapped a layer of carpet around the fork to make it slightly bigger for clearance & spring back. Turned the forks to press the carpet against the softened plastic & held it there while it cooled. Tank adjusted to suit with a little clearance.

The Acerbis tank was without brackets, petcocks or cap.

The brackets I can make by myself, no problem, petcocks and cap can still be bought from Acerbis.

The front fender is from Polisport the super moto model in orange.

As soon as I have it fitted I will post, with pictures.

This could take some time till I get the stuff from Acerbis.

The TT600 tanks are still in the Acerbis catalogue

My guess is that mine is a 20 liter model, they have a 23 liter model also.

There is only one way to find this out, by filling it up.

The new 600 tanks aren't like yours. They have huge "elephant ears" and are quite a bit wider in every dimension than yours.

Thanks for posting. It's been years since I looked into it and I always believed that tank to be obsolete and out of production. I'll give JustGasTanks a call.

I spoke to JustGasTanks today. I missed the boat.

The history on your tank is that it was discontinued by Acerbis a few years ago just as I had thought. At some point JustGasTanks got Acerbis to re-introduce it for sale to their own customers and it has recently (again) been discontinued, this time apparently for good. All stock has been depleted.

You done good.

It took some time but now all the parts are delivered and I made some contraption in stainless steel to mate the Acerbis tank with the original TW connection points for the fuel tank, all the metal was covered with rattle can aluminum.

The next pic shows the 6 mm bolt at the original fuel tank hook up under the seat, the other pin further back was used for the XT350 tank, which was a little longer.

The plastic side panels are tucked under and inside the wings of the Acerbis tank.

The black fuel line goes to the right side petcock and has a T connection on the left side to the carb.

Image

The tank is short and wide, the two pucks for the front hookup of the tank are partly in front of the tank.

This is how it looks with the seat back in place, there is still some work to do on the seat to connect up to the tank.

On Monday my TW will cross the 100 000 km mark. From that 63 000 km by myself after I bought it in 2008.

Thank you, Johanjos.

I carried it home on one of the few things with an even bigger tank.

Comparison shot with my XT350 tank. The 5 gallon carries most of the fuel quite low in the tank so it may be fairly less obtrusive than I thought. Can't wait to mount it. Note the petcock (One per side) location. Good to the last drop.

lizrdbrth, it was my pleasure to supply this tank to you.

Now, before everybody jumps on me for another tank:

This was the second and last tank that I could lay my hands on.

Some leftovers that I was lucky to find in a small shop in Tel Aviv.

On the other hand there is a Acerbis Honda XR600 1988-1996 that looks pretty similar, from the picture in the catalog, and should still be available from Acerbis. If anyone wants to try that out and publish the results on this forum, that would be nice. It is 22 liter according to the catalog.

This forum is peopled with the best folks.

How cool.

Johanjos, I have been fortunate enough to visit your stellar country and loved it there.

You are a good man for hookin' the Lizard up like this. No doubt he's in a dark corner with it as we speak . . .

Well Bagger, this was easy, the Lizard showed interest for this tank and there was another one at the shop, so I hooked them up together.

From reading many posts on this Forum it was clear to me that the Lizard was a major contributor and always ready to help other people.

So if in this case he needed a little help, it was my pleasure to provide it.

And yes, I love it here also, much better climate then the Netherlands where I was born.
